adWho else wants to create the best blog ever? It sounds like a pretty silly concept, right? I thought so too but I had a really strange, illuminating experience the other day that totally shattered my perspective of what was possible from blogging.

Of course, I was really humbled by that email - and wondered to myself: other than my obvious transcendent good looks and unusually poetic command of the English language, what makes MY blog the “best blog ever” to this particular reader? Equally as importantly, if I’m trying to teach other people how to blog to the bank a bit- how can this be “distilled” into a simple, and repeatable formula that ANYONE can emulate?

You could try to adopt my personal sense of stellar style and panache, but the truth is, that can take a lifetime to learn, and you still might not get it right. Instead, here are the 3 most important things that you need to be able to do, in my opinion, to DOMINATE the conversation in any new niche you enter, simply by creating a conversation on your blog that your readers love.

Tip #1: Don’t take yourself too seriously

There is very little in life I take exceptionally seriously, because, well, it’s all small stuff. Being able to laugh at yourself is the key component to creating conversation with your readers, because it “breaks the ice”, especially in the online marketing space where everyone is an expert.

Tip #2: Respond to as many comments as you can

I LOVE to see blogs that have long strings of comments that are unanswered by the blog owner, especially in niches I’m working in. Why? It’s quite simple. It lets me know it’s a market I can easily dominate, simply by doing the right thing. What’s the right thing? Engaging ( and respecting) the people who are nice enough to contribute to the conversation by responding to their comments on your blog.

Tip #3: Be Original - Be Creative - and Be Yourself

I’m a bit eccentric, and even though I work in the “online marketing” space, I don’t pretend to have all of the answers, or to be some stuffed shirt who has to toe a corporate line. I’ll often share odd or strange thoughts, little notes to myself, or even leave comments on my own posts. Not in a contrived way, it’s just sort of the oddness of my personality. Does that turn some people off? Absolutely, I’m sure it does. But it also turns SOME people on….and allows me to enjoy and have a personal passion for my blog, without fear that my frailties need to be swept under the rug. People relate to people…and we’re ALL a bit kooky in our own ways. Being true to that has been my benchmark for blogging, and I apply that to each and every niche I enter….and very successfully to boot.
